While many North Carolina public systems have consolidated, some remain independent city school districts, such as Mooresville Graded School District in southern Iredell County and Kannapolis City Schools in Cabarrus/Rowan counties. In South Carolina, Lancaster County has one public school system, while York County has four, each with its own distinct character.
A common theme among all regional schools is growth. The increase in population is causing tremendous growth in school enrollment, and that puts pressure on classroom space, money and resources. As you visit schools, you'll see plenty of new construction and expansion projects under way, as well as many modular units, or mobile classrooms.

Charter Schools
The Charlotte region also has several charter schools to consider. Charter schools, which originated in Minnesota in the early 1990s, are independently operated public schools designed to serve as laboratories for innovation in education. Created and run by parents, teachers and/or community leaders, charter schools receive the same per-pupil funding as other public schools. However, they can spend the money and operate with fewer restrictions and government rules. The schools must be approved by the N.C. Board of Education before they can begin operation and are periodically reviewed.

Carolina Entrance Requirements:
North Carolina
A child entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 16.
A child entering the first grade must be 6 years old on or before the same date.
A copy of the child’s birth certificate and proof of residency must be taken to the school in order to register the child.
All students need proof of a current physical examination when enrolling in North Carolina schools for the first time.The following basic immunizations are required:
Five or more DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus).
Three doses by age 7 months and two booster doses, one dose between 12 and 19 months and the second dose on or after the 4th birthday and before enrolling in school (K-1) for the first time. If the fourth dose was administered on or after the 4th birthday, the fifth dose is not required. Four polio vaccines. Two doses by age 5 months, a third dose by 19 months of age and a booster dose on or after the 4th birthday and before enrolling in school (K-1) for the first time. If the third dose was administered on or after the 4th birthday, the fourth dose is not required. Four MMR (two measles, one mumps, one rubella) for children enrolling in K-1. A child must have two measles vaccines with one dose on or after the 1st birthday, but before 16 months of age. As long as doses are separated by at least 30 days, second dose may be given any time before beginning school. In addition, a child must have one rubella vaccine and one mumps vaccine occurring on or after the 1st birthday, but before 16 months of age.Four HiB (not required after 5th birthday) Three doses of HbOC or two doses of PRP-OMP by 7 months old and a final dose of any type on or after the 1st birthday, but before 16 months old. Children who receive the first dose of HiB on or after their 1st birthday and before 15 months old are required to have only two doses with one dose being after 15 months of age. Children who receive the first dose of HiB vaccine on or after 15 months old are required to have one dose.
Three Hepatitis B vaccines with one occurring prior to 3 months old, a second dose by 5 months old and a third dose by 19 months old. Persons born on or after July 1, 1994 are required to receive the hepatitis B vaccine. The third dose of hepatitis B vaccine must not be given before the child is 6 months of age.
One Varicella. One dose of varicella vaccine - on or after 12 months of age and before age 19 months - is required for children born on or after April 1, 2001. However, an individual with laboratory tests showing immunity or a history of chickenpox documented by a health care provider, parent, guardian or person in loco parentis shall not be required to receive varicella vaccine.
Documentation of prior history of chickenpox disease must be on or attached to the lifetime immunization card or certificate of immunization. Ask your health care provider for more information.
A certificate of immunization must include the following:
Name of child and date of birth.
Sex of the child.
Name of the parent(s) or guardian.
Address of the parent(s) or guardian.
Number of vaccine doses given.
Date vaccines were given (month and year is acceptable for out-of-state transfer students). Signature of physician or health department stamp.Kindergarten students must have a health assessment before entering school.
Transfer students should bring their most recent report card or transfer slip to verify grade. Beginner’s days are held each spring at school to help parents prepare children for entry in the fall.

S.C. law requires that children between ages 5 and 17 enroll in school. Schools operate for 180 days each year.
Children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 must enroll in a public or private kindergarten program unless the parent or legal guardian signs a waiver or chooses to home school their child under the guidelines of South Carolina law.Waiver forms are available at your local school.
All children entering S.C. schools for the first time must be immunized prior to enrolling and obtain an S.C. Certificate of Immunization form. Certificates may be obtained from the S.C. Health Department or other sources of medical care.
South Carolina requires the following immunizations:
Measles,Mumps, Hepatitis B, Rubella, DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) Polio, and Varicella (chicken pox).
